New BBC drama The Moorside tackles the disappearance of Shannon Matthews, but what is verity story regarding the nine-year-old’s hoax kidnapping?

Headlines all over the united kingdom were dominated by Shannon’s disappearance on February nineteen 2008, with police undertaking the largest search operation since the Yorkshire liquidator thirty years earlier.

The West Yorkshire girl was later found on March fourteen 2008, a short distance faraway from her hometown of Dewsbury.

She was discovered in a flat owned by Michael Donovan, the uncle of Craig Meehan, who is the young man of Shannon’s mother, Karen Matthews.

In the property, Shannon was found alive, drugged and hid in the base of a couch, with uncle Michael Donovan being inactive instantly at the scene in Batley Carr.

It was soon discovered the complete seizure had been a scam between Donovan and Tibeto-Burman Matthews to say a £50,000 reward, with the pair being sentenced to jail for eight years for seize, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice.

During the trial on Gregorian calendar month five at Leeds Crown Court, the pair each denied all the charges levelled against them – with prosecutors describing Tibeto-Burman as a ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ character WHO contend up to the cameras and police.

Karen’s boyfriend Craig Meehan but had nothing to do with Shannon’s abduction, but was unfree for twenty weeks subsequently for the possession of indecent pictures of kids on his pc.

After the trial of Tibeto-Burman and Donovan, Shannon was placed in the care of her authority and given a brand new identity.

She is now living with a new family aged eighteen, and is believed to not have any contact with her mother.

Karen was free from jail in Gregorian calendar month 2012, and is now living in southern European country underneath a new name once serving half her sentence. By this time, Donovan had also been free.

The two-part BBC drama The Moorside has faced some criticism but, after it was discovered the family had no plan the show was being created.
